Building Australia's RNA Future Through Collaborative Excellence

The NSW-RRTN unites twelve universities across NSW and ACT, along with affiliated medical research institutes, to create a truly inclusive and collective ecosystem.
This network is designed to accelerate research, foster new partnerships, and promote excellence in RNA science and education. It also aims to address critical regulatory, legal, clinical, and ethical dimensions of RNA technology through a cross-disciplinary approach that spans STEMM and SHAPE fields.

The NSW-RRTN focuses on overcoming key challenges in the development of RNA therapeutics, such as targeted delivery and treatments for the immune system and the brain.
A key feature of the NSW-RRTN is its integrated Training Program, cultivating a skilled workforce capable of supporting the RNA sector’s growth. This includes postgraduate scholarships, industry internships, and professional development through short courses and microcredentials, including GMP training for advanced biomanufacturing. The program is designed to be scalable and adaptable, supporting both immediate needs and long-term national strategies.
These efforts are closely aligned with major state investments, including the RNA Research and Pilot Manufacturing Facility operated by Aurora Biosynthetics, and the RNA Australia initiative. Together, these form the backbone of a $200 million, decade-long commitment by the NSW Government to RNA research and development.
By fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and government, the NSW-RRTN will enhance the region’s capacity to lead in RNA manufacturing and therapeutic development, empowering the next generation of RNA researchers and innovators to strengthen Australia’s biomedical capabilities, and deliver tangible benefits to society.
